June is just around the corner and if it’s June, it’s summer!  Technically summer does not begin until June 21st, but we all know that in Maine, summer begins right after Labor Day.  Consumers are already spending time thinking and planning their summer activities and your business needs to keep up the pace.  Start planning in early April on how best to feature your products, services and business for the summer mindset.

What Can You Do?

Be Creative

Have some fun with marketing that focuses on what your customers are thinking about this time of year.  Be sure all of your messages match the season with warm and vibrant colors and themes tie in with the heat of summer.  Have some fun by celebrating such holidays as National Donut Day on June 1st or Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 22nd.

Take the time to brainstorm ideas that relate to both your business and the holidays, events, and other things that your customers are thinking about this time of year.  Be sure all your messages match the season with warm and vibrant colors and themes tie in with the heat of summer.  There is quite literally a holiday or celebration for everyone!  Check out websites such as:  timeanddate.com or holidayinsights.com for lists and ideas to inspire your seasonal marketing efforts such as National Donut Day (7th), World Ocean Day (8th), Fishing Week (2-8), Gardening Week (2-8), or Candy Month (sweet!).  Use these fun holidays to liven up your retail space, website, and social media posts with fun pictures, helpful information and contests.

Flag Day (June 14th)

Flag Day celebrates the commemoration of the United States flag. Hang those flags and encourage customers to do the same. Decorate in red, white and blue and feature those colors in any special offers or coupons for early June.  If possible, participate in local Flag Day events or show off your flag pride on social media.

Fathers Day (June 16th)

If your business caters to the male persuasion, this holiday is a no brainer!  In truth, Any type of business can join in on the fun with a little creativity.  Gyms can offer special fitness packages just for Dads, restaurants should think about special dinner/wine packages, and a solon or spa may offer special deals on men’s grooming items.  Other ideas for any business:

  • Father’s Day Gift Guide: Write a blog post or create a poster and shelf displays featuring suggested items for Father’s Day.  Use social media to help promote the guide and the featured items. 
  • Gift Basket:  Put together a Father’s Day gift basket at your business to make it easy for kids and moms to shop for dad. Be creative with what might be included.
  • Grab & Go: Promote gift cards and other easy gift ideas in one central location.  Display a few of the items and then have some already wrapped and ready to fly off the shelves making the shopping experience quick and easy for buyers.    

Summer Solstice (June 21st)

Celebrate the longest day of the year with extended store hours.   Use social media to promote your extended hours and any summer sales you may have at that time.  Consider teaming up with other local businesses to create a summer evening shopping/dining experience.  If your city or town holds solstice events, be sure to add your support with donations and volunteers as well as special geared towards the event.

School’s Out!

Join in on the good cheer and promote your business to children, college students, and families enjoying their summer break!  Or maybe you want to offer a promotion to weary parents who are already counting the days until September 😉

  • Host an End of School sale to clear out old merchandise
  • Write a blog featuring things to do in your town during the summer – make sure to include a stop in to your business in this list
  • If your business is typically quiet during the summer months, take time to get involved with a summer school, camp or other activity and host events for students, campers, and their families


Help high school and college graduates celebrate their new beginnings with ideas such as: 

  • Discounts on items that a graduate would need as they move to a new area, start a new job, or head off to college
  • Special discounts for graduates who post a picture of themselves at your business wearing their cap and gown
  • Sponsor or attend the local high school or college graduation

Jump Into Summer
