  • Fruit Cake Toss Day (3rd)
  • Festival of Sleep Day (3rd)
  • National Bagel Day (15th)
  • National Popcorn Day (19th)
  • Compliment Day (24th)

Any business can find a way to celebrate these special days or these month-long events:  Blood Donor Month, National Soup Month, and Financial Wellness Month.  Ask customer to bring in fruitcake for a discount.  Up the ante by having an actual fruitcake toss (if you have the room) for prizes.  Have free bagels or popcorn available on those specific days.  Offer a gift or coupon to anyone who arrives at your location with a blood donor sticker.  Mattress & Bedding stores have an excellent opportunity to celebrate Festival of Sleep Day while financial services, banks, & insurance companies have a perfect tie in with Financial Wellness month.

What Else Can You Do?

Have a sale

Consumers have come to look for and expect decent markdowns after the holiday season ends.  Be unique with your offers and the items you choose to promote.  Take into consideration what you have going on this month that is unique to you and your business.  Maybe an anniversary?  Do your vendors have something to celebrate or share with you and your customers? Promote it!

Encourage Gift Card Redemption

72% of shoppers who redeem a gift card spend more than the card value (often up to 20% more!).  All those gift cards purchased as holiday gifts are now ready to be redeemed – right when you need it most.

Think about the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is generally the first weekend in February.  Any marketing should be completed in January to take advantage of this event.

The New Year offers a time for review and the opportunity to improve your business.  Taking the time to start planning early will allow you to easily meet deadlines for ordering inventory and creating effective advertising.  Strong plans for the coming year will help keep you focused on what is important and make your business more successful.
