Small Business Resolution for 2018: Website!

Is now the time to update your current website or to start fresh with a new website?

The answer to this question is not a difficult as it sounds.  If your website is outdated or under performing, now is the time.  If you are considering adding a blog, now is the time (check out our recent blog post for hints on how to get started with a blog).  If you do not have a website at all, now is DEFINITELY the time.

Why Now?

Today, your company doesn’t just need a website.  It needs a well-designed, easily navigable, engaging website that meets the needs of your customers and your business alike.    According to some studies, 75% of people judge the credibility of a company based on the design of its website. When looking for a service or product most people are likely not going to pick the company that has an outdated website or one that doesn’t work.

Here are several reasons it may be time to update or start over with your website.

  • It Looks Outdated – Contains Broken Links

If your website is not visually appealing, you may not seem as trustworthy or knowledgeable as your competitors.  Add to that outdated function, design or a site that just doesn’t work correctly and you are pretty much asking your customer to look elsewhere.

  • It Is Not Mobile Friendly

As indicated above, user experience on your site can make or break your business, and you don’t want to lose potential customers simply because they could not view your site on a tablet, smart phone, or other mobile device.

  • Too Slow/Poor Functionality

A slow moving website or one that is difficult to navigate will lead to higher bounce rates as people get frustrated and leave your site.

  • Your Branding, Product Offering, or Goals Have Changed

While you don’t need to do a full site redesign each time you adjust your marketing goals, it’s a good idea to check every so often to be sure your site is still aligned with your newest marketing plans.  Are you using the most current logo and taglines?  Is your content current and relevant to your branding and goals?  Is your product and services listing accurate?

  • Poor Search Results

Potential customers must be able to find you online.  Changing navigation, improving content, and ensuring mobile compatibility will improve your SEO.

Where Do I Start?

Incremental changes are usually preferable to changing everything at once.  Start with a purpose “why do you want to change?” and set clear goals for your finished product.  Before you start to update, look for inspiration on other successful websites in your niche, find good-looking fonts that you can use on your website, and search for tools that can help you better your website’s design and performance.  Determine how easy your site is to update.  Can you do it yourself?  Should you?  Do you have the necessary funds in your budget to hire someone to do the work?

Your website is often the first impression you make. It is a central place for customer and prospects to learn more about you, the products and services you provide, and how to get in touch with you.  Redesigning your website is one of the most powerful things you can do for your company online.  By following best practices and using a strategic approach to your website redesign, you can help your company gain improved ROI and increased brand visibility.
